What type of Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like the majority of homeowners, getting San Antonio window treatments that give you privacy and noise control to maintain your castle is a concern. Any window covering is better than an uncovered window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, particularly on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Non-Square Windows

Most large, rectangular windows in your home are simple to cover with nearly any window treatment including San Antonio shutters, shades, or blinds.

But there might be some situations when you need a special style of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These could be:

  • Bathroom windows where excess moisture might cause problems for fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are long and thin where window treatments can be jostled around when you use the door.

  • Irregular windows like arches, round windows, bay windows, etc., where typical store-bought blinds and drapes can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Large windows that can be difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll need window treatments that go the distance to provide privacy to your house.

As a plus, shop around for window treatments that can block sound to keep outside noises outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The window treatments we recommend most for privacy are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when complete privacy and sound control is what you want. If you want to let light in and see outdoors, just give the louvers a tilt. For high windows, you should keep the louvers tilted at an angle so light can enter but passersby can’t see in.

Interior shutters are also perfect for non-rectangular windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are water resistant, they’re perfect for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent anyone being able to see in your home. While they can’t be cut to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Protect Your Privacy

While any window treatment adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are two that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add a an airy feeling to a room. Yet they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, particularly when it’s dark out.

Another window treatment we don’t recommend for privacy are aluminum or heavy blinds, which can break or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t completely shut the blinds because of breakage, then they’re useless for privacy.
